In this blog, I’d like to share my personal experience with seven skill-building photography exercises that have not only improved my craft but also enriched my perspective as an artist.
- Two Dozen: Stand in one spot and take 24 unique photographs without moving your feet. This exercise pushes you to be creative with your gear and surroundings, challenging you to see the world in new ways.
- Ten of One: Take 10 unique and/or abstract photographs of a single small subject. This exercise helps you to focus on details and develop your ability to see the world from different perspectives.
- Change Up: Try a different genre of photography, such as street photography or sports, to expand your skills and challenge yourself.
- Photograph the Same Subject Every Day, Week, or Month: This exercise helps you to develop a deeper understanding of your subject and improve your ability to capture its essence over time.
- Go Shopping: Take photographs of items in a store, focusing on composition, lighting, and storytelling. This exercise helps you to develop your ability to capture everyday objects in a unique and interesting way.
- Make Photos with a Specific Person in Mind: Understand the audience of your photograph and create images that are tailored to their tastes and preferences.
- Take Only Twelve Photos a Day: This exercise helps you to focus on quality over quantity, encouraging you to think carefully about each shot and develop your ability to capture the essence of a scene.
These exercises have not only improved my technical skills but also enriched my perspective as an artist. They’ve helped me to overcome creative blocks, develop my ability to see the world from different perspectives, and expand my skills in various genres of photography. As you embark on these exercises, remember to be patient with yourself and to embrace the process. Photography is a journey, and each exercise is a stepping stone on that path.
